The King of Dark Roasts
– a dark-roast lover eh? well, you’ve found your home –
A small signboard and a little red roof with the logo ‘cafe MARUGO’ entices the passer-by on the quiet back streets of Keyaki Hondori in Kego, Fukuoka.
Inside, you’ll find a dimly lit cafe that reminds you of your local jazz pub. There’s something rustic, nonchalant and relaxed about the atmosphere inside.
Behind the counter, you’ll find a rather shy and reserved master ready to give you the most amazing coffee experience.
The owner, roaster and barista Yasutaka Shiraishi opened cafe MARUGO back in 2010 and has been serving coffee using the flannel drip.
The coffee he roasts are on the darker side. He uses a direct-flame roaster which means that the flames directly touch the beans; this allows the coffee to fully reveal it’s characteristics and potential.
– this blend blew me away the first time…. and it never ceases to amaze me even to this day –
The anticipation grows as you inhale the alluring chocolaty & smokey scent emanating from the coffee. A few sips in and you know you’re tasting something that takes you to superstardom.
Just how should I describe this taste? Is it even worth trying to formulate into words?
What I can say is that it’s very distinct; you’ll know straight away if you are having the Marugo blend. Also, the lingering after-taste pulls at your addiction switch. Finally, the powerful and alluring fragrance that’s released after you take a sip is just mind-blowing. This blend is a must-have when you visit cafe MARUGO.
Cakes Crafted With Finesse
– it’s not only the coffee that’s out of this world, the artisanal cakes are just as marvellous –
Together with coffee, you have a wonderful selection of home-made cakes. The one above is the gateau chocolat. The crumbly top and the moist inside is a delight to the palate, not to mention the bitter-sweet cacao notes which go really well with the coffee. The cake also comes with freshly-whipped cream which lifts the rich cacao and elevates the pairing experience.
I personally like his gateau chocolat and cheese cake. They are as good as any cake you would find at a patisserie, perhaps even better. And most of all, they go really well with his coffee.
Cigarettes, Melancholic Jazz & Blissful Moments
– what a beautiful way to spend the night –
The atmosphere at cafe MARUGO is warming. The rustic wood, dim lights and displays of miniature cars and coffee grinder antiques.
This cafe is a hidden gem for people looking to have a moment of peace from their busy life.
That’s not all.
If you smoke, this place is ideal. That image of sipping coffee with a cigarette in one hand…. well, you can fulfil that here.
Sometimes, you just want that time to stare into space and think of nothing. Absolutely nothing. And maybe find bliss in that nothingness. This maybe just be the perfect place to do that.
For coffee-lovers and people looking for a quiet and melancholic atmosphere, this place is a must for a truly amazing experience.
And especially for dark roast lovers, you may be coming back for more Marugo Blend coffee.
A hidden gem in a busy city.
